We're talking about an environment that cares for their WHOLE being - not just their physical health, but also their emotional wellbeing and mental peace.

It all starts with yummy, nutritious meals that give them the good stuff they need for growing and learning. But guess what? It doesn't stop there. It's in every part of their day, from the words we share with them, to the actions we show them.

It's in the ways we teach them to behave, and in the love we shower on them. It's about making a safe, supportive, and loving home. A place where they're safe to grow, curious to explore, eager to learn, and above all, a place where they can truly shine.

1.Cook Together

Cooking together opens up a world of fun and learning for you and your kiddos, no matter how old they are. It's a fun opportunity to bond, learn, and cultivate a love for good, wholesome food. Even the littlest ones can join in the fun - introducing them to new tastes and textures is as easy as letting them help wash veggies or stir ingredients.

As your kids get older, the kitchen becomes a classroom for more advanced cooking skills and nutritional knowledge. Here's where you can chat about why their growing bodies need protein or why whole grains trump processed ones. Reading food labels and understanding what goes into their food? That's a lesson waiting to happen too!

Plus, there's no better way to help your kids understand where their food comes from than by cooking it together. Whether it's tracing the journey of a carrot from the farm to your plate, or discovering how bread is made from scratch (we love us some homemade sourdough in our home!), these are conversations that can lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of food and nutrition.

And let's not forget the fun part. Put on some tunes, experiment with new recipes, or even spark some friendly competition with a family cook-off.

Staying fit and active is just as fun as it is important for our wellness. It's right up there with eating well! The best part? It's a great excuse to have a blast with the whole family! I know my kiddos are WAYY more inclined to get outside and be active if my husband and I lace up our shoes and get out there with them (instead of just telling them to β€œturn the tv off and go outside! it’s so nice out!”)

Got a toddler or two bouncing around the house like me? Try harnessing that infectious energy into a simple game of tag in the backyard or a playful walk in the park.

Got a middle schooler? Why not try family bike rides? It's a great way to stay active and explore your local area. Plus, it feeds their growing sense of independence.

For high schoolers, you could up the adventure with activities like hiking or rock climbing. If they're into a sport, join them! Whether it's shooting hoops, tossing a football, or even learning their favourite dance routine, it's a great way to bond.

But remember, the most important thing is to keep it fun and relaxed. We want to associate physical activity with good times and family bonding, not as a chore.

And of course, let's not forget how staying active helps us from a family wellness standpoint. It can increase the amount of protein our bodies synthesize, which aids in muscle repair and growth. It also improves insulin sensitivity, crucial for metabolizing carbohydrates. So, not only does staying active keep us fit, but it helps us make the most of all those yummy, nutrient-dense foods we enjoy.

3. Spend Time Together Off Screens

In this digital era, it's super easy for screens to fill up our family time. But guess what? This is where we can bring about a big change! It's super important for us to make room for quality family time, sans screens, to nurture our bonds, ignite creativity, and foster mindfulness.

How about setting aside time for interactive storytelling sessions for your toddlers or young ones? Pick books with vibrant pictures and captivating tales that can help your tiny tots enhance their language skills and pique their curiosity about the world.

And don't forget about fun tactile activities like playdough (great homemade non-toxic play dough here!) or finger painting. They not only keep those tiny hands engaged but also boost their motor skills.

If you're a family with middle schoolers, how about playing board games? This can be both fun and educational, teaching them valuable lessons about strategy and decision-making. Plus, it's a sneaky way to boost their math and problem-solving skills, all while having a load of fun as a family.

4. Plant a Garden and/or Grow Berry Bushes Together

Isn't it just magical how gardening gives us this special bond with nature and shows us where our food comes from? It's such a fun and rewarding journey that provides hands-on learning for us and our kiddos. And let's not forget that nothing beats the taste of home-grown fruits and veggies, right?

Just picture the big smile on your little one's face when they plant their first seed and see it grow into a plant. It's a learning experience, but it also feels a bit like magic to them.

Gardening is a great way to introduce them to the wonders of botany, nutrition, and life cycles. You can show them how tiny seeds sprout into plants and how these plants give us yummy fruits and veggies brimming with the nutrients we need.

As your kids enter middle school, gardening becomes an amazing science project. You can chat about the role of sunlight, water, and soil in plant growth, or about how different veggies provide different nutrients. This hands-on experience will help them appreciate all the hard work that goes into growing food and the importance of nutritious choices.

For all the moms with toddlers, this could be as simple as scheduling some 'me time' during the day for your little one. They could get lost in their world of toys or even help out with simple chores around the house, like sorting laundry (riveting, I know haha) But It's a fun way for them to feel responsible and also explore their budding creativity and independence.

For families with middle schoolers, it's all about celebrating their hobbies and interests. If they love to read, how about setting up a cozy reading corner for them? Or if they're into painting, create a space where they can freely express their art. This not only encourages their independence but also shows them that their interests are cherished and supported.

As for high schoolers, it's about giving them the reins to manage their own time, hang out with friends, or just take a breather. They're at that exciting stage where they're figuring out who they are and where they fit in, and having a personal space to do so can be super empowering. It’s SO SO SO important to slow down and allow them time to just β€œbe,” which I think is missing in this day and age of trying to accomplish everything under the sun to get into college.

Just remember, giving your kids some 'me time' is not neglecting them, far from it! It's showing them that you respect their individuality and trust their decisions. It's all about helping them gain the confidence and self-awareness they need to navigate the world on their own terms.

And, of course, keep those communication lines wide open! Let them know that even though personal time is important, the family is always there, ready to back them up with love and support. This balance can help foster a strong family bond while still promoting individual growth and independence. Isn't that just the best of both worlds?

6. Eat Nutrition-Rich Meals

When it comes to meals, let's keep in mind that it's not just about satisfying hunger. It's a chance to fill our bodies with nutrient-dense foods, supplying us with the essential vitamins and minerals we need to grow and stay healthy.

How about aiming for a rainbow on your plate? Include a variety of fruits, veggies, proteins, and healthy fats. Different colors often mean different nutrients, so a brightly colored plate is probably a nutritionally rich one.

For all you moms with toddlers, introducing a wide array of fruits and veggies early on can be super beneficial. Try adding a 'rainbow' of fruits and veggies into their meals and snacks. Give them slices of red strawberries, orange carrots, yellow bell peppers, green cucumbers, and purple grapes. It not only jazzes up their plate but also ensures they're getting a full spectrum of nutrients. It’s okay if they don’t eat everything. Keep putting it on their plate to get them familiar with it. And remember it take kids MULTIPLE times to try a food before completely saying β€œoh, they don’t like it”

If you're a mom with middle schoolers, it's a perfect time to start teaching them about the importance of balanced meals. You could chat about the benefits of each food group and how they contribute to their health. For instance, proteins like chicken or tofu are crucial for building and repairing muscles, especially as they get more active. Whole grains like brown rice or quinoa are energy powerhouses and are packed with fiber which aids digestion. And let's not forget, fruits and veggies are brimming with essential vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants.

For those with high schoolers, they may be starting to take more control over their meals, even cooking for themselves. Encourage them on to include nutrient-dense foods in their meals, and remind them of the importance of balance. It's also a good time to teach them about reading food labels and making informed choices about what they're eating.

We all know it's not always a walk in the park to get kids to eat their fruits and veggies. But hang in there, moms! Kids often need a few tries before they accept new foods. Cozy evenings offer such a delightful charm, don't they? It's the perfect moment to unwind from the day's hustle and bustle and really connect with your loved ones. This precious time lets us push away all distractions and fully enjoy each other's company. How about creating a warm, inviting space? You could pop in a couple of comfy cushions, set up some soft lighting, and even whip up your family's favorite healthy snacks!

Got toddlers running around? Reading a book together can help catch their attention and help them settle down for the night. Choose books with vibrant, engaging pictures and stories that ignite their imagination. You can make the whole process interactive too! Ask them questions about the story or the characters. It's a wonderful way to stimulate their critical thinking.

If you have middle schoolers, board games can be a real hit. Not only do they spark friendly competition and encourage strategic thinking, but they also bring about loads of laughter. Games like "Clue" or "Monopoly" are fantastic choices, combining fun with some brain exercise. High schoolers might appreciate activities that feel a bit more grown-up. How about starting a family book club? Everyone gets to read the same book and then discuss it. Or, you could have a DIY night where everyone works on a small project, something like building a model, knitting, or painting. It easy to hit the east button and order out and sit in front of the tv. But making dinner time TOGETHER a priority is such a healthy habit. Not only does it avoid mindlessly eating, but it allows time for your kids to share about their day, for YOU to ask questions, and for you all to bond together and laugh.

Dinner time is a powerful tool for fostering family connections, promoting healthy eating habits, and teaching important life skills. Let's make the most of this precious time we have with our children because these are the moments they'll remember and cherish as they grow older.

9. Say Goodbye to Processed Foods

Processed foods might be quick and easy, but they often miss out on essential nutrients and are filled with stuff our bodies aren't too fond of. As moms, we always look for the best for our kiddos, and that includes what they munch on. It's time to peek into our pantries and make some healthier swaps.

Start by giving your pantry a makeover. Take everything out and see what you've got. Check the labels - if there are ingredients that sound like they're from a science textbook, they're probably not perfect for your family's health. Now, I know it's a bit scary to think about ditching those handy, grab-and-go snacks that your kiddos adore, but trust me, there are yummy alternatives out there that are just as scrumptious and far more nutritious.

For your little ones, consider replacing processed fruit snacks with real fruits. Fresh blueberries or apple slices are just as sweet and are brimming with valuable nutrients. You can jazz it up by using small cookie cutters to create fun shapes out of melon or pineapple. How fun!

For your middle or high schoolers, who might be dashing off to after-school activities or part-time jobs, consider prepping snack boxes at the start of each week. Fill them with a variety of nutrient-packed foods like cheese cubes, meat sticks, whole grain crackers, grapes, or sliced bell peppers. This way, they can snag a box on their way out the door and you can rest easy knowing they're fueling their bodies with wholesome food.

Remember, we're not aiming for perfection - just better choices where we can. Even small changes can make a big difference over time. As you start swapping processed foods for healthier options, you might find that your kids are brimming with more energy, their moods are more stable, and they are more focused. And that, super moms, is absolutely worth the extra effort.

When we look at nutrition, whole foods are a far superior source of nutrients compared to processed foods. They pack more vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and less sugar, sodium, and unhealthy fats. By making these swaps, you're not just sprucing up your family's diet - you're setting your kids on a path towards lifelong healthier eating habits.

I found that when we have less crap in our house, the easier it is to get your kids to eat healthy! I don’t mind if they help themselves to snacks even because I know our house is stocked with healthy foods.

10. Try New Outdoor Activities

Even if you didnt grow up fishing or going kayaking, give it a try with your kiddos! It will be a func experience for you both and you can laugh at making mistakes (when your kids can do things better than you haha). It’s fun to get them outdoors and into nature and cultivates a healthy family wellness dynamic.
